As water temperatures are low this time of year pike fishing is in full swing, and that means you’ll likely be hooking into one in no time. Learn the best way to unhook one of these monster fish with the short video below.
As you just saw unhooking a pike is pretty easy as long as you have the right tools and take your time. In case you missed any steps they are listed out below.
The first thing you want to do after catching a pike is take it out of the net so the hooks don’t get caught in the netting. Place the pike between your legs and hold it slightly on its back. Place one hand gently into its gill plate and feel up to the soft tissue area inside its mouth. With you other had gently open its mouth to see where the teeth are located to see where you can put your fingers. Use one set of forceps to get the first hook lose, but keep the hook clamped in the forceps. Then use the other set of forceps to get the other hook out, and the pike is now unhooked. Be sure to set the two forceps aside with the hooks still clamped in when you are ready for the release.
