Two fishermen in West Virginia set new state records for black crappie within just 75 minutes of each other, making for an extraordinary day on Woodrum Lake. On August 8, Lindell Marker and Dwight Priestley were fishing together when Marker first broke the state record at 7:30 a.m. with a black crappie measuring 17.36 inches. This catch tied the existing weight record of 2.85 pounds, previously held by Craig Webb.
However, Marker’s triumph was short-lived. At around 8:45 a.m., Priestley surpassed both the length and weight records, reeling in a black crappie that outdid both Marker’s and Webb’s catches. Both anglers used live minnows to achieve these record-breaking feats.
The back-to-back record-setting catches drew attention from West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, who congratulated the fishermen on social media, expressing hope that these achievements would attract more anglers to the state’s fishing spots. The records were officially confirmed by West Virginia DNR’s Fisheries Biologist Cory Hartman, with Brett McMillion, director of the WVDNR, celebrating the catches as a testament to the excellent fishing opportunities at Woodrum Lake.
