Fall Surf Fishing for Striped Bass and Bluefish Heats Up

This past weekend brought plenty of action to the beaches, with anglers landing bluefish, striped bass, and kingfish. On Long Beach Island, the Fall Surf Fishing Classic saw a new leader in the striped bass category when Jake Smith of Ship Bottom caught a 9.68-pound, 30-inch bass while using eels at Barnegat Light. In the bluefish category, Dominick Minando of Waldwick took the lead with a 7.38-pound bluefish. Both fish were weighed at Fisherman’s Headquarters.

Elsewhere, Captain Dave Riback reported high bonito catches on the Queen Mary party boat on Saturday, though Sunday’s fishing slowed slightly due to currents. Captain Ryan Bogan of the Jamaica II noted good bottom fishing action with sea bass, porgies, and some blackfish, though Sunday’s south wind impacted the bite.

The weather forecast predicts gusty northwest winds and a temperature drop that could affect water temperatures.
