A massive northern pufferfish caught in Barnegat Bay last week is making waves in the fishing world, as it could potentially set a new rod-and-reel record with the International Game Fish Association (IGFA). This remarkable catch follows another near-record sheepshead caught recently in Raritan Bay, adding to the excitement for local anglers.
Capt. Dave DeGennaro, known for his expertise in targeting pufferfish, landed the giant blowfish while guiding a small fishing party. Although the pufferfish season started late this year, it’s been proving rewarding for those seeking a fun challenge in the bay. DeGennaro has been working diligently to land a record-breaking blowfish this season, using specialized gear such as small winter flounder hooks and clam chum to lure the fish.
The latest catch weighed in at 1 pound, 6 ounces, surpassing the previous IGFA record of 1 pound, 1 ounce. However, this fish isn’t the largest blowfish ever caught in New Jersey waters— that honor goes to a 1-pound, 14-ounce pufferfish caught in Delaware Bay in 1987, though the New Jersey Fish and Game has since retired the blowfish category. DeGennaro has already begun the official paperwork with the IGFA, hoping to secure the new record for his 1-pound, 6-ounce pufferfish.
While the IGFA has strict records in place, the catch still has anglers buzzing with the possibility that this giant blowfish might set a new benchmark. In addition to this record-breaking catch, DeGennaro’s team is excited about the good fishing conditions for various species, including sea bass, porgies, and triggerfish, making for a productive fishing season in the bay.
