Record-Breaking Smallmouth Bass Caught in New York’s St. Lawrence River

On September 22, Dante Piraino of Baldwinsville, New York, made headlines during a B.A.S.S. Nation tournament in Ogdensburg by landing a remarkable smallmouth bass. Fishing in the depths of the St. Lawrence River, approximately 30 feet down, and using a soft plastic lure, Piraino hooked a stunning nine-pound smallmouth measuring 23.5 inches in length.

A recent announcement from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) confirmed this catch as a new state record, surpassing the previous one by eight ounces. The fish’s weight was verified on a calibrated scale under the supervision of tournament officials, ensuring accuracy in the process.

A Memorable Catch and Release

According to the New York B.A.S.S. Nation Facebook page, Piraino chose to release the record-setting bass after the measurements were taken. Witnesses reported that the fish swam off immediately after being returned to the water. Barb Elliott, a nationally recognized fish care expert, oversaw the handling and praised the catch on social media. “It was an ABSOLUTE TANK of a fish,” Elliott wrote. “The thickness and weight were unbelievable. I was honored to be there and handle such a gorgeous specimen!”

New York’s Year of Record-Breaking Catches

Piraino’s achievement marks one of several record-breaking catches in New York this year. On July 11, James Britenbaugh of Pennsylvania reeled in a 12-pound, 6-ounce largemouth bass from Cayuga Lake. Earlier in the summer, Chuck Zimmerman from Hilton, New York, caught a 15-pound, 14-ounce longnose gar in Butterfield Lake on June 21.

Interim DEC Commissioner Mahar celebrated the state’s angling achievements, stating, “New York provides some of the best bass fishing in the country, and Mr. Piraino’s incredible catch is a testament to the outstanding opportunities here. There’s nothing better than spending time with family and friends on the water pursuing these exciting sportfish. We encourage anglers to check out the Angler Achievement Awards Program before their next trip.”

A Testament to New York’s World-Class Fishing

New York continues to prove itself as a premier destination for anglers seeking exceptional fishing experiences. With world-class waters and abundant opportunities for both casual and competitive fishing, the Empire State is cementing its reputation as a haven for record-breaking catches.
