Tragic Ice Fishing Accident Claims Life of Wisconsin Man

An 87-year-old Wisconsin fisherman tragically passed away earlier this month after falling through thin ice while fishing on private property.

According to NBC 26, the Suamico Fire Department responded to the scene on Bayside Road in Suamico on December 9th. Fire Chief Joe Bertler stated that locating the man amidst dense vegetation was one of the most challenging aspects of the rescue. Despite being found in just three feet of water, the situation quickly turned dire. Rescuers pulled the man from the freezing water and attempted life-saving measures, but he succumbed to complications the following day in the hospital.

Chief Bertler emphasized the importance of ice safety, noting that familiarity with a fishing spot can create a false sense of security. He stressed the need for extended periods of below-freezing temperatures to ensure ice stability. Bertler also advised that removing heavy, wet clothing can help individuals pull themselves out if they fall through the ice.

Ice fishing is a popular pastime in northern states like Wisconsin, but it carries inherent risks, especially early in the season when ice conditions are unpredictable. Suamico, a village north of Green Bay, has since experienced colder weather, which may have improved ice stability in the area. This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the need for vigilance and caution when venturing onto frozen waters.
