New Spotted Bass Record Set at Lake Hartwell During MLF Invitational

A new Lake Hartwell spotted bass record was set during the Major League Fishing (MLF) Invitational, with a massive 6.25-lb. bass caught by pro angler Chad Mrazek from Texas on March 16. The record-breaking fish not only earned Mrazek recognition but also helped secure a third-place finish in the tournament.

Mrazek landed the impressive bass using a drop-shot rig with a 6th Sense Bamboosa 5.3, a salt-infused soft plastic worm with a ribbed design. This versatile bait is popular across regions, from Carolina to Texas, for targeting various species.

“The record fish, along with most of my catches, were primarily mid-lake,” said Mrazek. “Most hotspots were rock transitions 15 to 25 feet deep. The fishing was slow in the mornings but picked up in the afternoon each day.”

His final-day catch, including the record-setting bass, weighed 19 lbs. 5 oz., securing third place and a $20,000 prize.

Mrazek, originally from Texas, has a deep connection to Lake Hartwell. He moved to attend Lander University in Greenwood, S.C., where he earned a degree while competing in MLF tournaments and collegiate fishing events. Since graduating, Mrazek has pursued professional fishing full-time, crediting experience on East Coast lakes for enhancing his career.

The previous Lake Hartwell record, a 5-lb. 6.08-oz. spotted bass, was caught by Raulie Bleech on March 18, 2007.

The MLF Invitational, held from March 14-16, saw Mitchell Robinson of Landrum, S.C., claim victory with a three-day total of 53 lbs. 13 oz. Robinson’s win earned him a $115,000 prize, which included a $35,000 Phoenix Bonus. Dustin Smith from Trussville, Ala., narrowly missed the top spot, finishing second with 53 lbs. 11 oz.

Marietta, Ga., angler Emil Wagner represented Georgia well, finishing 14th with a total of 47 lbs., securing a $10,000 prize.

The tournament not only showcased outstanding angling talent but also solidified Lake Hartwell’s reputation as a prime destination for bass fishing. With a new record in the books, anglers are sure to keep their eyes on the waters of Hartwell for future challenges.
