Michigan Angler Catches Record-Breaking 64-Pound Flathead Catfish in Monroe County

A Michigan angler’s recent bowfishing excursion in Monroe County resulted in a new state record for flathead catfish. Codie Carlson, from Newport, Michigan, caught a massive flathead catfish weighing 64.46 pounds and measuring 45 inches in Plum Creek on June 29.

The previous state record, set in 2022, was 53.35 pounds and 43 inches. Carlson’s catch surpasses the previous record by over 11 pounds. DNR fisheries biologist John Buszkiewicz verified the record-breaking fish and noted that his team may have caught the same fish in a 2020 survey, weighing 55 pounds and measuring 43 inches at the time.
