Record Buffalo: What You Need to Know About This Giant Fish

Smallmouth buffalo are a type of fish that can grow to massive sizes. Recently, a 54-pound, 7-ounce smallmouth buffalo was caught in Texas, setting a 50-pound line-class world record.

What is a Buffalo?
Buffalo are a group of fish, including smallmouth, black, and bigmouth species. They belong to the sucker family (Catostomidae) and can grow to enormous sizes, with world records ranging from 63 to 82 pounds.
Fishing for Buffalo
Buffalo are bottom feeders that feed on plankton, plants, and invertebrates. They are found in slow-moving or stagnant water with high turbidity and plenty of vegetation. Anglers often target buffalo during the spawning season, when they can be more aggressive.
Catching Buffalo
Catching buffalo on hook and line can be challenging. Smaller fish are more likely to eat lures, while larger buffalo are often plankton filter feeders. Fly fishermen may have an edge, using flies that imitate invertebrates or aquatic plants.
Targeting Buffalo
To target buffalo, anglers can try the following:
  • Fish in slow-moving or stagnant water with high turbidity and plenty of vegetation
  • Use lures that imitate hellgrammites or other invertebrates
  • Try fly fishing with mop flies or woolly buggers
  • Target spawning aggregations in the spring
Buffalo Fishing Records
The state of Missouri keeps records of its largest buffalo catches. Recent records include a 55-pound, 9-ounce black buffalo caught by Ryan Young and a 56-pound bigmouth buffalo caught by Dr. W. J. Long.
The Appeal of Buffalo Fishing
Buffalo fishing offers a unique challenge and opportunity to catch large fish. While they may not be as popular as other species, buffalo fishing has its own appeal. With the right presentation and technique, anglers can land a giant buffalo and experience an exciting battle.
