Polish Anglers Land Record-Breaking 9.6 Foot Wels Catfish

In a stunning catch, Krzysztof Pyra and Adrian Gontarz, anglers from Poland’s Polish Angling Academy, have landed a massive Wels catfish measuring 292 centimeters (9.6 feet) at Rybnik Reservoir in southern Poland. This incredible catch beats the previous record of 285 centimeters caught in Italy’s River Po in 2023.

A 90-Minute Battle

Pyra and Gontarz spent over an hour and a half battling the giant Wels, which was carefully measured and photographed before being safely released back into the water.

Rybnik Reservoir: A Hotspot for Giants

Rybnik Reservoir’s unique growing conditions, including warm discharge from a nearby power plant, create an ideal environment for Wels catfish to thrive. This record-breaking catch confirms Rybnik’s status as one of the world’s premier trophy fisheries.

About the Wels Catfish

The Wels catfish is Europe’s largest freshwater fish species, known for its elongated body, broad head, and long barbels. This nocturnal hunter uses sensory whiskers and a highly developed lateral line system to detect prey in low visibility.

Tackle Tips for Giant Wels Catfish

To catch a monster like this, you’ll need heavy-duty gear, including:

  • 9-10 foot rods with plenty of backbone
  • Large, high-capacity reels with strong gearing
  • 80-120 lb braid and heavy fluorocarbon or monofilament leaders
  • Oversized circle or J hooks with breakaway sinker rigs
  • Live baitfish, eel, or large chunks of cut fish

Next time you find yourself in Poland consider fishing for one of these monsters. You’ll never know what you’ll catch, you might make history.
