Gulf Anglers Rejoice: Lack of Hurricanes Brings Crystal Clear Waters and Fantastic Fishing

The absence of hurricanes and tropical storms in the Gulf of Mexico has brought a welcome surprise for anglers: crystal clear waters and incredible fishing opportunities. After a dry summer and a strong early cold front, the shallow waters west of Central Florida are as clean as they’ve been in years, making it an ideal time to grab your fishing gear and head out.

Shallow Water Bonanza

The clean water has brought fish into the shallows, making it easier to catch a variety of species. Hogfish, scamp grouper, and snapper are just a few of the species that are biting in the shallow waters. In fact, a recent fishing trip to a rocky bottom spot in 45 feet of water yielded a dozen keeper hogfish, half a dozen scamps, and a few snapper, porgies, and other bycatch.

Tips for Anglers

To take advantage of this great fishing, anglers should focus on shallow water areas, especially during the last 90 minutes of sunlight. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Use lighter leader and hide baits well to catch wary snapper in the clear water.
  • Target rocky bottom structures and areas with ample fish life.
  • Be prepared for sharks and other predators, and use heavier tackle if necessary.
  • Take advantage of the cooler winter months, when fish are more active during the afternoon and evening.

A Fisherman’s Paradise

The lack of rain and prolonged bad weather has created a fisherman’s paradise, with clean water and abundant fish life. As long as the dry weather continues, anglers can expect great shallow water fishing for hogfish and other bottom species. So grab your gear and head out – the fishing is fantastic.
