Massive 15.75 Pound Largemouth Could Set New Tennessee Record

A giant largemouth bass caught on Nickajack Lake may soon rewrite the record books in Tennessee. The fish, weighing an impressive 15.75 pounds, is currently under review and could surpass the existing state record set in 2015.

Sequatchie County angler Darren Nunley landed the bass early Saturday morning while fishing with guide Hensley Powell. If officially certified, the catch would edge out the current record by roughly half a pound.

A Surprising Fight

Despite the fish’s massive size, the initial hookup did not signal anything extraordinary.

The bass reportedly swam directly toward the boat, giving the impression it had come off the hook. After regaining contact, the angler brought the fish in without the kind of explosive fight often associated with trophy bass.

Once the fish surfaced, its true size became clear. The moment quickly shifted from routine catch to potential record-breaker.

Official Weigh In and Review Process

To ensure accuracy, the bass was weighed on certified scales at a local store, with assistance from Shawn Edgmon of the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The fish measured 29.5 inches in length, further confirming its impressive proportions.

The certification process is not immediate. A fisheries biologist will verify the species and may conduct DNA testing to determine if the fish qualifies under state record guidelines. This step is especially important due to the presence of hybrid largemouth bass in Tennessee waters.

The Role of Hybrid Bass

Many of Tennessee’s largest bass are believed to be F2 hybrids, a cross between Florida strain largemouth and native northern largemouth bass. These fish often grow larger due to what biologists refer to as hybrid vigor.

Stocking efforts have played a significant role in producing trophy fish. The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency began introducing Florida strain bass into Nickajack Lake in 2015 as part of a broader program across Tennessee River reservoirs.

Similar stocking in nearby Chickamauga Lake led to a surge in double digit bass over time, including the current state record set by Gabe Keen.

A Fishery on the Rise

While many expected record class bass to continue coming from Chickamauga, Nickajack Lake has quietly developed into a serious contender. Recent reports indicate a growing number of bass exceeding eight pounds, suggesting the lake is reaching peak production for trophy fish.

Local knowledge and guiding experience played a role in this catch. The fish was taken using a bladed jig paired with a soft plastic trailer, a popular setup for targeting big bass in late winter conditions.

Waiting for Confirmation

Although all signs point toward a new record, the catch must still complete the official review process before it can be confirmed. Measurements, species verification, and documentation all factor into the final decision.

For now, the bass stands as a likely new benchmark for Tennessee anglers. If approved, it will mark another milestone in the state’s growing reputation as a destination for trophy largemouth bass.

Whether officially confirmed or not, the catch highlights the continued success of fishery management efforts and the increasing potential of Tennessee waters to produce truly exceptional fish.
