Earlier this month, an ice fishing trip turned tragic when an 87-year-old Wisconsin man fell through thin ice and later succumbed to complications from the incident.
According to NBC 26, the man was fishing on private property when he broke through the ice. Despite a swift response from the Suamico Fire Department, the rescue was hindered by dense vegetation, making it difficult to locate him. Fire Chief Joe Bertler reported that the man was found in only three feet of water, but precious time had already been lost.
The fire department arrived at the scene, located off Bayside Road in Suamico, just before 5 PM on Monday, December 9th. Emergency responders pulled the man from the frigid water and attempted life-saving measures. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital the following day.
Fire Chief Urges Caution for Ice Fishermen
Following the incident, Chief Bertler has been actively warning the community about the dangers of early-season ice fishing. He emphasized that familiarity with a fishing spot can sometimes lead to a false sense of security. Bertler noted that more consistent, below-freezing temperatures are still needed to create safe ice conditions.
Additionally, Bertler advised that anyone who falls through the ice should consider shedding heavy, wet clothing, as it can make it easier to climb out of the water. This safety tip could be critical in giving individuals a better chance at survival in similar situations.
Ice Fishing Safety Reminders
As winter progresses, more anglers will head out to try their luck on frozen lakes and ponds. Ice fishing remains a popular pastime across the northern United States, where temperatures drop low enough to create suitable ice. However, tragedies like this serve as a sobering reminder of the risks involved.
Suamico, a village located just north of Green Bay, Wisconsin, has since seen colder temperatures, which may help solidify the ice. Even so, experts continue to stress the importance of exercising caution when venturing onto frozen bodies of water.
Let this incident serve as a reminder for all ice fishermen to prioritize safety and remain vigilant as they enjoy the sport.
