A 500-pound leatherback sea turtle entangled in multiple sets of fishing gear was successfully rescued last Wednesday in Cape Cod Bay by the Marine Animal Entanglement Response team from the Center for Coastal Studies in Provincetown.
According to officials, the turtle had initially become stuck in one set of gear and subsequently dragged it into three more, making it difficult for the animal to reach the surface for air. Boaters fishing off Sesuit Harbor spotted the distressed turtle and quickly contacted the center’s emergency hotline.

The response team instructed the boaters to remain at a safe distance and keep visual contact with the turtle until trained responders could arrive. Inclement weather, including strong winds and rain, caused delays, but the team was ultimately able to locate and safely free the turtle.
In addition to the fishing lines, a small recreational hook and monofilament line were embedded in the turtle’s shoulder. Those were also removed during the rescue. Officials noted the turtle was in good overall health and small in size for a leatherback of that weight.
The Center for Coastal Studies emphasized the importance of quick action and proper reporting when marine animals are found in distress. Boaters who spot an entangled animal are encouraged to call the National Marine Fisheries hotline at 1-866-755-6622 or contact the U.S. Coast Guard via channel 16. Maintaining a safe distance is critical until trained responders arrive on scene.
