Lake Angeline’s Crystal Clear Waters Turn Red
A normally crystal-clear fishing lake in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has turned red after a beaver dam breach. Located south of Ishpeming in Marquette County, Lake Angeline’s water level rose and became discolored after the breach, which occurred on July 17, 2025.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy investigated the incident. According to officials, recent significant rain events may have contributed to the breach of the aging beaver dam. The beaver pond is now stable, and water levels are not expected to rise further.

Impact on Lake Angeline:
- Water level rose due to the breach
- Incoming sediment caused the lake to turn reddish-brown
- No dead fish were observed during the investigation
Current Status:
- The beaver pond is stable
- Water levels are not expected to rise further
- Public access to the lake remains open for boating and fishing
Lake Angeline Remains Open for Fishing and Boating:
The lake is safe for boating and fishing, with no known safety concerns. The partially submerged DNR boat launch remains accessible.
