Mahi Mania Off the South Shore
Hurricane Erin may be keeping some anglers on shore, but the South Shore in Massachusetts is buzzing with excitement over mahi-mahi catches. Captain Jason Colby’s proven waypoints and 70-degree water temps are the key to success. Try using a green mackerel Yo-Zuri Hydro Monster Shot, a sinking twitch bait that casts a mile.

Striped Bass Action
The South Shore remains the epicenter of the big striped bass bite in the Bay State. Look for schools to begin north early and push southerly as the day progresses. Mackerel are the surest way to catch bass, with some found by the SA Buoy and better bets farther out along the western edge of Stone Ledge.
Black Sea Bass and More
The Westport side of Buzzards Bay is filled with black sea bass, tautog, bluefish, and striped bass. Don’t neglect the livewell assortment – pogies and mackerel make for an interesting mix.
Tips and Targets
- Troll X Raps in deep water off Greater Boston for consistent catches.
- Try tube and worm in the mouths of the Weymouth Fore River, Back River, and Town River.
- Don’t miss the superb squid season at Nut Island and Pemberton Pier.
- For tranquil waters and striped bass, head to Thompson Island through Dorchester Bay or the inner harbor.
Fishing Forecast
While waiting for calm seas, consider retooling and planning something different. Middlebank trips for haddock, trolling sessions for gator blues, or targeting football tuna with speed jigs could be exciting alternatives. Keep an eye on the South Coast for variety and the chance to catch mahi-mahi.
