A stunning 175-pound cobia caught off the coast of Perth, Australia has shattered the previous IGFA all-tackle world record by a whopping 40 pounds. The incredible catch was made by 18-year-old angler Koby Duncan while fishing with his friends on a birthday charter.
The Catch
Duncan was working a Z-Man HeadlockZ jighead in 100 feet of water when he hooked the massive fish. Despite initial doubts from Captain Drew Clowes, who thought it was a stingray, Duncan persevered and eventually landed the monster cobia.

A Record-Breaking Catch
The cobia measured 79.6 kg (175 pounds) on certified commercial lobster scales, making it the heaviest cobia ever caught on rod and reel. The previous record, set in 1985, was significantly lower, highlighting the magnitude of Duncan’s catch.
The Role of the Leeuwin Current
The Leeuwin Current, a warm-water current that runs along the west coast of Australia, is believed to have played a role in the presence of the giant cobia in southern Australian waters. This current can bring pelagic species, like cobia, into the area, making for exciting fishing opportunities.
A Testament to Angling Skill
Duncan’s catch is a testament to his angling skill and perseverance. Despite being under-gunned with a PE3 rod, he managed to wear out the massive fish and bring it to the boat.
