Rare Anglerfish Washes Up on San Diego Beach

A fish typically found thousands of feet deep in the Pacific Ocean recently washed up on San Diego’s Black Beach. An anglerfish was found on the beach and its origin is still unknown. This kind of anglerfish is known as a Pacific Football fish and is about the size of a soccer ball.

Anglerfish like this one have been sighted all over the Pacific Ocean. One was found earlier this year in Laguna Beach, but it’s been 20 years since one was seen in San Diego.

Little is known about these fish which use the lure on top of their head to attract fish in the pitch-black depths of the ocean. Each time one of these fish is found it provides valuable information on the anatomy and behavior of this elusive species.
