Big Bucks on the Line: Big Bear Lake’s $50K Fishing Derby Returns This June

Anglers hoping to hook more than just trout should mark their calendars for June 7, when the 27th annual Fishin’ for $50K Trout Derby returns to Big Bear Lake. Hosted by Visit Big Bear, the popular fishing event offers a shot at landing major cash prizes—including five tagged trout worth $10,000 each.

The two-day event has become a summer tradition at the Southern California mountain lake, drawing around 700 participants each year. Organizers aim to top previous years by giving attendees a chance to win even more prizes through tagged fish, weight-based awards, and a gear raffle.

Five trout have been specially tagged and released into the lake ahead of the derby, and each is worth a $10,000 grand prize. Dozens more trout are tagged for smaller cash payouts, adding even more chances to walk away a winner. In 2024, two lucky anglers each reeled in tagged trout worth $10,000 during the derby.

In addition to the big catch prizes, awards will also be given for the largest trout caught during the event. A raffle will cap off the weekend, offering thousands of dollars’ worth of fishing gear and merchandise.

Visit Big Bear CEO Travis Scott described the derby as a unique way to combine outdoor fun with serious prize potential. “Our hope is that all five of the tagged trout are caught this year,” Scott said. “All you need is fishing gear and bait, lots of patience, and of course a little luck.”

Ticket prices start at $80 for adults and $30 for children, with discounts available for those booking overnight stays near the lake or taking advantage of promotional offers. The event is expected to sell out again this year, as word continues to spread about the large cash incentives and scenic mountain setting.

The derby will conclude on Sunday, June 8, with an awards ceremony at the Marina Riviera Hotel. Organizers say it’s the perfect blend of community, sport, and a chance to win big on the water.
