Morgan Wallen is topping charts again with his latest album, I’m The Problem—a sprawling 37-track release co-written by 49 songwriters. The physical versions of the album, sold exclusively at Target, are flying off shelves, not just for the music, but for an odd twist: each vinyl copy includes a novelty “hunting ID,” while the CD version comes with a faux “fishing ID.”
According to both Target’s website and Wallen’s own social media post on release day, the IDs are meant to be collectible extras for fans who enjoy the outdoors. But despite the clearly promotional nature of the items, not everyone is in on the joke.
Across TikTok and other platforms, a handful of fans have confused the gimmicky cards for actual hunting and fishing licenses. One video, which has racked up over 4 million views, shows a fan calling it “the best promotion you’ll ever see… you can hunt and fish while listening to him.” Others commented with disappointment upon realizing the IDs weren’t valid permits. “Almost bought it just to go fishing,” one user lamented, complete with a sad-face emoji.
Another TikToker, @malibuhank, posted an unboxing of the $17 CD he picked up while grocery shopping. His video zooms in on the so-called fishing ID, revealing what it really is: a novelty card with an outdoorsy photo on one side and a playful “license” mock-up on the back. “Just a picture of two dudes fishing,” he says, laughing. “And then a fake license.”
To clarify: these IDs aren’t real. They won’t grant permission to fish in Tennessee—or anywhere else. Obtaining a legitimate fishing or hunting license requires personal information, payment, and authorization from a state’s wildlife agency. These cards are simply fun add-ons meant to align with Wallen’s outdoorsy image.
In reality, most experienced hunters and anglers understand the distinction and see the stunt for what it is: clever marketing aimed at a demographic that overlaps with Wallen’s fanbase. And while it’s not the first time pop culture has blended with outdoor recreation, there’s always the risk of someone taking it a little too literally.
In the end, it’s just another reminder that a real license can’t be found next to the CDs and vinyl at Target. Enthusiasm for fishing is great—but the game warden won’t accept your Morgan Wallen fan merch.
