Angler Catches Largest Freshwater Fish Ever Landed in Connecticut

On May 25, 2025, Connecticut angler Rafal Wlazlo etched his name into the state’s fishing history books by landing an enormous 45-pound, 8-ounce common carp from Lake Lillinonah. This remarkable catch has now been officially confirmed and certified by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), not only as the new state record for common carp but also as the largest freshwater fish ever recorded in the state of Connecticut.

Wlazlo’s impressive feat occurred on the still waters of Lake Lillinonah, one of the state’s premier fishing destinations known for its healthy populations of bass, pike, and carp. The fish was reportedly caught using specialized carp fishing tactics, a growing trend among serious freshwater anglers. Details surrounding the tackle used have not yet been released, but the combination of preparation, technique, and patience clearly played a critical role in the successful landing of such a massive fish.

The previous Connecticut state record for common carp stood at 43 pounds, 12 ounces, caught in 2012. Wlazlo’s fish not only broke that record by nearly 2 pounds but also surpassed the weight of any freshwater fish previously documented in the state, cementing its place as a once-in-a-lifetime catch.

Carp fishing has grown in popularity across the U.S., particularly in the Northeast, where many anglers have discovered the excitement and challenge of targeting these powerful bottom-feeders. Though often overlooked in the past, carp are now gaining recognition for their size, strength, and elusiveness. In Europe, carp fishing is a major competitive and recreational pursuit, and American anglers are increasingly following suit with specialized baits, rigs, and methods imported from overseas.

Lake Lillinonah, which straddles the border of Fairfield, Litchfield, and New Haven counties, was created by the impoundment of the Housatonic River. It provides a rich habitat for various fish species and has become a hotspot for serious anglers looking to hook into trophy-sized fish. Wlazlo’s record-setting carp is likely to draw even more attention to the lake, especially from the region’s growing community of carp anglers.

The DEEP praised the catch as an example of Connecticut’s healthy freshwater ecosystems and the success of ongoing fishery management efforts. “This record is not only an incredible personal achievement for the angler, but it also reflects the quality of our water resources and the diverse fishing opportunities we’re fortunate to have in the state,” a DEEP spokesperson commented.

For Wlazlo, the catch marks the culmination of persistence and passion. As with many dedicated anglers, the pursuit of a record fish can span years, requiring not only skill and luck but also a deep understanding of fish behavior, seasonal patterns, and the local environment.

This new record is expected to inspire a fresh wave of interest in carp fishing across New England and beyond. With summer fishing season in full swing, anglers may find themselves drawn to Lake Lillinonah in hopes of landing a giant of their own—or simply to stand in the same waters where history was made.
