Michigan’s Au Sable River Tops National List of Best Fly-Fishing Spots

Michigan is home to the top fly-fishing river in the United States, according to a recent USA Today ranking voted on by anglers nationwide.

The Au Sable River, a renowned cold-water fishery in Northern Michigan, claimed the No. 1 spot on the list of “Best Fly-Fishing Rivers in the U.S.,” released on June 11. The ranking was curated by a panel of experts and finalized through public voting.

“Fly fishing on rivers across the United States offers a diverse and enriching experience,” USA Today noted. “Anglers can enjoy the tranquility of nature, the thrill of the catch, and the satisfaction of mastering the art of the sport.”

Stretching 138 miles through scenic Michigan towns like Grayling, Lewiston, Roscommon, Mio, and Oscoda before emptying into Lake Huron, the Au Sable River has long been celebrated for its crystal-clear waters, natural beauty, and angling heritage.

The river’s ecosystem supports a thriving population of brown trout, which makes it a favorite destination for visiting fly fishers. With ideal conditions on its shores and in its waters, the Au Sable continues to be a model of sustainable recreational fishing.

USA Today emphasized the river’s significance: “For visiting fly fishers, brown trout are a particularly common catch, with the surrounding shores offering perfect conditions for the fish to thrive each year.”

The Au Sable edged out several other prominent fly-fishing rivers across the country, including:

  • Rocky River in Ohio

  • Nantahala River in North Carolina

  • South Fork Holston River in Tennessee and Virginia

  • Kenai River in Alaska

  • Snake River in Idaho and Wyoming

  • Spokane River in Idaho and Washington

  • Madison River in Montana and Wyoming

  • Youghiogheny River in Maryland and Pennsylvania

  • Grand Ronde River in Washington and Oregon

While states like Alaska and Montana are often associated with world-class fly fishing, Michigan’s Au Sable River has emerged as a premier destination for anglers seeking a rewarding and scenic experience in the heart of the Midwest.
