A 7-pound largemouth bass stole the show on a friends’ fishing trip in Maine. Tom Payne and his friends had been fishing the lakes and ponds near Liberty, Maine, for several days. They were targeting big largemouth bass.
The Catch
Payne and his friend Dave Ulrichs were casting soft plastic frog poppers along the outside edges of lily pads in Stevens Pond. Something big clobbered Payne’s dark green popping frog. The fish tangled in the lily pad stems, and Ulrichs netted it and put it in the boat. The bass weighed 7 pounds, a new record for their group of fishermen.

A Special Trip
The group of friends has been fishing together for years, visiting Maine twice a year. They catch landlocked salmon and bass, and mount their biggest catches to display at their cottage. This trip was particularly special, with Payne’s largemouth bass and Ulrichs’ 4-pound, 14-ounce landlocked salmon setting new records for the group.
A Lasting Memory
The friends have been close since grade school and high school. Their annual fishing trips are a highlight of their year. The 7-pound largemouth bass will be mounted and displayed at the cottage, serving as a reminder of their memorable trip.
